Monthly Intelligence for the Biopharma World

Dear Reader,

As summer gives way to autumn, the conversation is moving beyond whether we can measure emissions to a more practical question: who needs to use that information, and what decisions should it enable?

For teams responsible for sustainability assessments and target setting, the value lies not simply in having emissions data, but in turning it into clear, actionable insight. Let’s shed some light on how.

Back in June, we introduced Eco Insight®. As if we predicted the heat coming, we decided to give all of us a well-deserved break for July and August. This month, we answer the question every reader has been quietly asking since: who is this for, and what do they get out of it?
Because a validated emissions database is only as useful as the workflow it slots into and it turns out there are two very distinct use cases. And we shall proceed without falling into the rabbit hole.

🤔Act I: TWO AUDIENCES, ONE TOOL

Eco Insight® was built to serve two distinct groups, and the Eco Insight® Use Cases guide makes the split explicit.

On one side sit existing BioSolve® Process users, whose process models and bills of materials are already built for them, Eco Insight® layers validated CO₂e values directly onto materials they’ve already entered. On the other side sit organisations new to BioSolve® applications: procurement and sustainability managers, consultants working from spreadsheets, who need pharma-specific emission factors immediately and without any existing software license.

The distinction matters because the starting point shapes everything downstream. A BSP user searches for materials directly from an existing bill of materials into Eco Insight® and moves toward in-silico emissions modelling and Green Design. A team new to Biopharm Services instead identifies materials manually from procurement records and uses Eco Insight® for Scope 3 carbon accounting and regulatory reporting — with the tool itself becoming their entry point into the wider Biopharm Platform ecosystem.

👤 Act II: WHO ACTUALLY OPENS THE TOOL

Three groups sit behind these two starting points. Procurement teams use Eco Insight® to compare supplier emissions across manufacturing routes and regions when making sourcing decisions.

Sustainability teams use it for Scope 3 carbon accounting, GHG inventories, and internal net-zero reporting, validated at speed.

BSP users layer CO₂e emission factors onto existing process models with an aligned material reference.

🖥️ Act III: WHERE ECO INSIGHT® SITS IN THE PLATFORM

Eco Insight® isn’t a standalone side project it’s the newest addition to the BioSolve platform, joining BioSolve® Process (in-silico process design, techno-economic assessment, ecological design and BOM/cost of goods modelling), Eco Concept (the BSP module estimating facility and process CO₂e, now enriched with Eco Insight® material factors), and BioSolve® Analytics (deepened process insights via Bayesian optimisation). Whichever door a reader walks through, existing BSP licence or none at all, the destination is the same validated, defensible emissions data, ready for a User or Enterprise license.

🍂 Let’s talk about something enticing. INDUSTRY INSIGHT: ADCs, FIVE YEARS ON — WHEN COST AND SUSTAINABILITY DISAGREE

Back in 2021, Biopharm Services modelled a HER2-targeting, cysteine-linked ADC to answer a simple question: could the industry make antibody-drug conjugates at commercial scale? Five years on, Technical Director Andrew Sinclair revisited that model with a 2026 lens and found something nobody expected.

The industry’s dominant manufacturing shift since 2021 has been the move from stainless steel with clean-in-place (CIP) toward single-use conjugation systems. Rebuilding the 2021 case for 2026, the model showed that switching to single-use raises conversion cost by roughly 20 per cent, driven by the cost of disposable assemblies replacing reusable, cleaned equipment. Yet the very same switch cuts process mass intensity by around 75 per cent, almost entirely because eliminating CIP removes the enormous cleaning water burden that dominates a stainless facility’s mass footprint.

Cost accounting and mass accounting rank the identical decision in opposite order. The disposable plastic that makes single-use expensive is nearly weightless; the cleaning water that makes stainless heavy is comparatively cheap. And whether single-use or stainless “wins” on cost isn’t fixed it depends on the antibody input price a given program faces, with a genuine crossover point separating the two. The lesson: ADC manufacturing strategy is a system-level problem, where cost and ecological sustainability must be modelled together from the earliest process decisions — not bolted on afterwards. Andrew unpacked the full crossover analysis at The Bioprocessing Summit in Boston this August. Curious but could not attend? Fear not, contact us.

✨ Biopharm Services Spotlight — Eco Insight®

Eco Insight® is Biopharm Services’ purpose-built, human-reviewed and validated CO₂e database for biopharmaceutical materials and consumables usable standalone or integrated directly with BioSolve® Process. It delivers multi-source, ISO 14067-labelled emission factors with full source transparency and an AI Assistant for rapid, cited, defensible data selection. Whether you’re layering emissions onto models you already have, or starting from a spreadsheet with no existing license, Eco Insight® meets you at your starting point.

Ready to see it for yourself? Oh, did we mention that we have a new request for a demo page, too?
